Gift to me, Gift to you, Gift to the planet...

Writing and sewing are rather on hold as I am still working to make our apartment livable! Today I finally got around to sorting through five bags/boxes of tissue paper and other wrapping supplies we'd saved from our showers, wedding and Christmas. I think we'll be set for awhile, don't you?

The rest of the family was all set to crumple up the tissue paper and throw it away at Christmas, until I wailed "No! Give it to me! I'll save it!" My uncle gave me a hard time after that, delighting in folding each piece with exaggerated precision. Ah well, reusing tissue paper (judiciously, of course, there comes a point!) is one of those money-saving tricks I love. Especially with the price of such things these days - !!!

Farewell, Shirley!

Oddly enough, one of my earliest memories of Shirley Temple was in "The Blue Bird" which was a pretty weird and scary movie for a wee one... no wonder it became a flop! Then there was Heidi, which totally broke my heart. But after that... I loved every Shirley Temple film I can remember, particularly "The Little Rebel" and "A Little Princess."

When I got a bit older, ABC did a made for TV movie about Temple's film career, which was pretty accurate as far as I've been able to tell. I would assume they'll dig it up out of their archives to air this week as Shirley Temple's name once more dominates headlines and thousands reminisce about her impact on their childhood.

Most articles are doing a wonderful job of mentioning not only Temple's young life in Hollywood, but also her later work in politics as an foreign ambassador, and her legacy to her family. Ah, if only all childhood stars could have such a glowing obituary!

Gushings of a Modern Housewife

Tomorrow I'll have been married 3 weeks. It's still fun to be taking care of my new house. Wise older women, chuckle away! I know it'll become harder as time goes on, but for now the littlest things are fun.

(On a side note, I think it's interesting how stay-at-home moms have adopted social media and pinterest in particular to stay connected, and gain fresh ideas and encouragement for maintaining their homes and raising their kids. True, there are downsides of envy, feeling inadequate, and procrastination, but when used properly I think it's pretty cool!)

Tablecloth ironing!

My man, hanging up the curtain rod.

The living room, decorated and clean!

Geeky wedding gifts

My kitchen, complete with new curtain!

Growing lettuce from a left-over stem.

Lampshade cover in progress

Lettuce gets bigger!

Major couponing adventure last night resulted in a VERY full fridge!
Nathan will do whatever kitchen work/food prep I ask, but planning the meals is definitely my strength. It's been a challenge to come up with menus and get all of the ingredients, but I'm getting better! It was a bit mortifying to have two recipes (a pudding and a soup) fail in a row, since normally my cooking is pretty good, but I managed to save the soup from it's excess of garlic, and the chicken I made the next night was a roaring success.
Every day I get a bit more put in order, but the craft room remains a work in
progress.

I've always wanted a washing pitcher, and we found this adorable little one
on our honeymoon for under $5 at an antique store!

A bit of beauty at the top of a bookcase.

A look at the other side of the living room, Nathan's ship on display.

The Wedding - Part 3 (The Honeymoon)

Thankfully after about four hours of sleep I started feeling better and we were able to enjoy our honeymoon.

We'd been working to get Nathan's 2-bedroom apartment set-up, but due to it being ground zero for the groomsmen on Friday morning, I wanted to make sure there was a feminine touch to clean up afterwards. Hannah, Vicki, Amanda, and Meg's little sister Mary Rose went over and cleaned... as well as leaving some special decorations...

Midnight snacks!

Welcome sign!

Rumplestiltskin's true love potion! (and fairy terrarium - Air)

They made four fairy terrariums for us, one for each element. Above is water.

On Sunday we packed up and headed out for the other part of the honeymoon - a gorgeous bed and breakfast in Stillwater, where we were treated like royalty (or at the very least, Grantham members of Downton Abbey).

We got some amazing food in Stillwater. Quickfire Pizza is fantastic - and gluten free for just $2 more!

Also gluten free - the breakfasts our innkeepers brought us every morning! They made my plate completely gluten free without making it look hardly any different from Nathan's!

We also enjoyed a local grill and malt shoppe, which offered udi's gluten free bread as substitutes for any of their buns on their amazing burgers.

Our rings!

The Ann Bean Mansion in Stillwater, MN. Highly recommended!

Then we came home and had fun doing our own cooking...

All in all, it was the perfect low-key but romantic and fun honeymoon for us. And the perfect way to watch the first season of Downton Abbey (which Nathan had not yet seen. We're not on season 3!)

What's the Point, Jo? (The Harry/Hermione Confession)

By now, most Potter fans have already seen the news. For those who haven't, read the full scoop - or what we have anyways - here.

"What we have" being the operating term here because it's only a soundbyte from a larger interview, which could shed more context on the situation and make it less... controversial.

C'mon, Jo, part of what made your books bestsellers is that you wrote them the way you did. Saying that you should have gone with a more predictable romance? In my opinion, this would just water the books down. I think your gut was right.

Yes, I could see how people could legitimately ship Harry and Hermione. Personally I think their relationship was terribly platonic - I've seen friendships like this and no matter how good of friends they are, there's not going to be romance there. There's just not.

Ron + Hermione is not going to make the most tranquil couple ever - but we all love well-written quarreling couples, don't we? Elizabeth and Darcy, Beatrice and Benedick, Rhett and Scarlett... we adore them.

And I've always thought that Ginny and Harry were well-suited for each other, that they would complement one another perfectly. And I'm not the only one to appreciate the strong similarities that Ginny has to Harry's mother - and men do often fall for women like their mothers, just as girls are drawn to men with similar traits to their fathers.

I think Ron+Hermione adds a strong side romance to the book, and I think it makes the whole dynamic more realistic.

But that's not really the point here, is it? The point, when it comes down to it is... why would Rowlings say something like this? She could hardly throw out something more controversial ("Dumbledore is Gay" won that award already), and at this late stage in the game, it doesn't seem like much more than an attention grabber. Which sounds pretty terrible to say, but really, why distress so many fans and rekindle the shipping wars that (let's be honest) were the darker side of the HP fandom?

She's very entitled to talk about her books. Goodness knows she kept them to herself during the whole writing process and deserves the chance to hash them out! But there are some bits I think are better kept locked away in her brain closets, and this is one of them.

Oh well, at the very least, it goes to show that even when your book is finished, published, and the example of worldwide bestseller, you can still wish you had the chance to edit some things. Whether that will encourage or discourage the perfectionists among us, I don't know.

The Wedding - Part 2.5 (The Legos)

If you read Matt's post, then you already know about this gift, but it's worth mentioning twice, due to supreme coolness factor. Very early on I told him that he was allowed to bypass the official gift registry and get me something Lego. Matt, being a very awesome "big brother" LOVES surpassing anything like expectations and filling me with delight with his Lego presents. This one was special even by Matt standards.

Yes, he gave us a geek's dream wedding... in Lego! Guarded by Buckingham guards! With a special printed lego sign!

Guests include Loki, Ironman, Sherlock Holmes and Gandalf!

Our ceremony is officiated by Elrond, my bridesmaid is Arwen (!) and our
ringbearer is... FRODO!

But look! Best Man Luke Skywalker has his lightsaber drawn, and Han Solo
seems to be distracted... and not by Darth Vader! What is it?

Uh oh, Boba Fett is gate crashing! Thankfully the Musketeer has it handled.
And if his sword doesn't do the trick, I'm sure Harry and Draco will whip out
their wands and do some wizardly badass magic!
So I majorly geeked out over this, despite my migraine. Nathan and I have laid out our living room to include space for a designated Lego display cabinet - we just have to get over to Ikea to pick one up!
