I plan to do an entire post on the wedding soon, but I'm a) still collecting photos and b) still unpacking and c) trying to catch up on business stuff. So for this Monday afternoon I will leave you with...

Downton Abbey 4.1

(I wrote this review during the British Broadcast of Episode 1. In the US, episodes 1&2 were aired together, so this review only covers half of the American broadcast. Unfortunately wedding craziness is going to keep me from reviewing the second half for the time being.)

What a joy it is when you venture back into a show and the premiere episode of the current season is even better than the last… even if it is permeated with mourning.

Spoilers to follow.

Episode One of Season Four takes Downton Abbey away from Soap Opera territory and deals with the aftershock of Matthew’s death in a respectful, insightful way. Mary and Isobel are allowed to have their deep, pervasive grief, while the rest of the family moves on and argues over how best to help these two still in blacks. It’s no surprise that Lord Grantham takes on the coddling role that lends no aid to Mary, while Tom (who knows this road all too well) sees most clearly what will help the new widow. Once again we get to see the depth and sweetness of Carson’s affection for Mary, and that she really does treasure him (even if her pride and hurt still get in the way, she is learning humility).

Edith comes out as perhaps more likable than ever, which is surprising seeing how disappointed I was in her after the Christmas episode. She and Gregson do not seem to have taken their relationship beyond the occasional kiss, and although the words ‘living in sin’ are mentioned, Gregson does seem serious about going to whatever legal lengths he must to give Edith the respectability of honorable marriage… even if that means relocating to Germany! (Downton Abbey, are you thinking long term? Are you already prepping for the NEXT war? Oh dear…)

The babies are the highlight of this episode in their brief screen time. It is utterly adorable to see Thomas’s affection for Sybbie, and shocking to see his accusations be legit for once!
O’Brian’s departure was handled as well as it could, and Edna… well I’m reserving judgement, which is more than I would have said during the last episode. So we’ll see.
I still don’t particularly care about the Jimmy/Alfred/Ivy/Daisy quadrangle (or is it a pentangle if you add Thomas into it? GAH) but I cared more about Ivy as a person than I’ve ever done before. Mrs. Patmore and Daisy both had brief but poignant roles in this episode. I loved Mrs. Patmore’s admission that she’s afraid of the new technology and Mrs. Hughes comfort. And Daisy’s valentine? “I may not have a follower, but I do have a friend.” Airpunch!

Grigg’s reappearance was a bit of a shock, but definitely exactly what Cousin Isobel needed. Bravo Mrs. Hughes for unfailing compassion and insight.

Thankfully they didn’t give Rose much this episode, which is necessary for the viewers who are still getting used to her. I’m glad that we’ll get to see more of her next week, however! And Bates and Anna, although honestly it’s just lovely to see them happy for awhile.

(Since episodes 1&2 were aired together in the US, episode 3 of the UK broadcast will be episode 2 for the American audience. Confusing, wot? This may make it harder for American audiences to be warned about a scene in this episode, given that all of the warnings are tied in with the words "episode 3." Anyhow, the episode of Downton Abbey airing on January 12th, 2014, will contain a scene that most viewers believe is more disturbing than anything ever shown on the show. I am not going to post details here, but if you want to know more, you can read my warning on tumblr. No character names are given, but the situation is explained.)

Too many feelings to catalog them all.

Packing up my life, ready to start another... it's a time of a lot of emotions. Half my books are at my parents house, half at the new apartment. My sewing stuff is migrating over. This weekend my big furniture goes. Soon it'll just be the bed and dresser I'm leaving behind for now... and then I'll be gone too. I've moved before, but this is very different on many, many levels.

So I'm nostalgic.

Moving into a new place. Decorating it to my taste. Setting up the china hutch my fiance redid for me. Laying out my kitchen, decorating my bathroom, organizing my new sewing room, preparing the new bedroom (first time sharing with anyone since College - !!!)... ready to be married and be able to stay and not have to leave before bed every night...

So I'm excited.

Planning. Moving. Answering questions. Keeping lists. Communicating as much as I can. Not getting distracted. Getting distracted and then making up lost time. Not feeling well. Feeling well, working hard, exhausted, falling down in my chair to recuperate, before starting it all again... Often I'm overwhelmed, but I just keep plodding onwards. Just two more weeks and the worst of the crazy will be over and the best of the new adventure beginning.

So I'm like every new bride, experiencing this life change.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all of my bloggers!

Wishing that every one of you may feel God's love as wonderfully as I do this holiday season! So many kind words from so many people whose faces I don't know have been left on my blog in the past few months... you have no idea how much it means to me that our story is bringing smiles and excitement to people we don't even know. I hope to share more of it very soon - just 24 days (and a honeymoon!) before I settle into a new normal and get back to regular blogging!

OUAT 3.11 "Going Home"

Oh this show breaks my heart.

I loved this episode but I cried actual tears. Man.

Still, it's a great set-up for the second half of the season.

SPOILERS COMING

I love how both Regina and Gold completed their cycles of redemption.

I HATED that they killed Gold. I'm actually not sure whether he's gone for good or not though. I could believe either way. I hope we get some decent Belle follow-up though, because Emilie de Ravin's reactions were fantastic.

I also HATED that Neal was once again separated from Emma and Henry. However I do love that Emma and Henry got one normal happy year together regardless of what comes.

I loved how Regina redeemed herself. It was perfect, and I really hope it stays when she goes back to the Enchanted Forest and she doesn't like loose all her memories of what happened and turn evil again. That's not super likely though, since Hook obviously remembered everything when he showed up at Emma's door. Which was lame. It should have been Neal.. But whatever. (Shippers can ship whatever they want, I now ship Hook/Tink, but we'll see).

I've got my heart set on a Snowing baby in the spring.

Not sure what to think about the Wicked Witch of the West being the next big baddie, but it wasn't much of a surprise. (Would it be terrible to have a villain that was NOT sexy? Seriously. It's getting a little predictable.)

Ready for Robin and Regina to meet, and to see Aurora, Phillip and Mulan again. Plus it looks like Storybrooke is coming to the middle of the Enchanted Forest? Looks like it won't be goodbye for long... unless you count three months until we get another episode as long which I certainly do!!!!

Shower Snapshots

In the space of one week I was thrown two bridal showers, drove across two states and back, and celebrated Thanksgiving with Nathan's family. It was intense but so wonderful!

From the shower thrown by my aunts - me and my girls! R-L, Sister, Sister-in-law-to-be, and Sister by mutual adoption. (all bridesmaids, but only 3 of the 6!)

Tea time! Both showers were tea parties, but very very different! For shower #1, my cousin brought her mom and grandmother's teacup collections to serve everyone their tea of choice in!

So much good food, and so much of it gluten free! In heaven!

Alas, I don't have such a good picture of the food spread at shower #2, but it was also amazing! My mother-in-law (to be!) pulled together an amazing and very authentic Victorian tea. It was fantastic.

Bridal showers are usually for the ladies, but since I knew so few of Nathan's extended family, I was glad to have him around! He regaled us all with the story of how he and I met, and then helped me open gifts and helped me connected faces with names.

And now I'm back home, just in time to enjoy another snowstorm. Hopefully all this weather will blow itself out by January 17th...!!!

Holidays! Wedding! Doctor Who!

Some thoughts

  • "The Day of the Doctor" rocked. It needs a full review, but I need to watch "An Adventure in Space and Time" So I can comment on the 50th as a whole...
  • ... because the 50th isn't just the one special, it's also the docudrama mentioned above, the radio drama (which sadly I have no way to experience) AND the amazing spoof "The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot" which is probably the most fantastic thing ever for a Whovian and Go Watch It Now.
  • First official holiday with the In-Laws-To-Be is this weekend and so I'm going to be away from the blog for a bit. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
  • My mother-in-law-to-be surprised me by driving in from two states away to attend my wedding shower this weekend.
  • My aunts, cousin and sister threw me an absolutely amazing shower, complete with miniature china teacups and tons of gluten-free goodness.
  • I was surrounded by the love of 30 women in person and more in spirit who God has placed as blessings in my life. The presents were amazing, but even more wonderful is the fact that I will be reminded of this love every time I see one of their gifts.
  • I'm trying to get as many thank yous done before I leave tomorrow morning... and pack... and, gosh, so many other things. Getting married is crazy and wonderful and there's only 51 days until I get to marry Nathan... I hope I can stay sane until then!
